Great article. Please pass on to the staff of MGSTech that I use this site as a valuable resource. The example of the Chevy Volt information will help me communicate clear and correct information regarding those incidents to my department personnel. This site will keep us informed and educated as compared to working in the unknown.

n the article you say "The Chevrolet Volt battery is reported to contain only four grams of Lithium in its several-hundred-pound battery." Can we ask what your source for that information was?

LG Chem Power Inc. is the manufacturer of the battery cells used in the Volt. If you look on the FAQ page on the Chem Power site you will see that near the bottom of the FAQ page they talk about how much lithium is required to make a 1 kWh battery.

See: http://www.lgcpi.com/faq.shtml

In this FAQ page LG claims that it takes .14 kg of lithium to make a 1 kWh battery. The volt has a 16 kWh battery. 16 x .14 = 2.24 kg of lithium. Thats 2,240 grams of lithium... not 4.

I just attended the extrication class in Sacramento. The class was great. Matt Stroud did an exceptional job covering the information I have been reviewing on your web site. Matt also stated that the fifth group of the third day at Sacramento was the first in the nation to remove a high voltage battery from a vehicle the firefighter way. That was my group. Thanks Matt if you get this please send me some photos. Chris A. Kemp
